How to Disable (Non Admin) Users from Using a Browser on your Server

Note: This is a simple method, but it does require that you think of and find all possible browsers on your server.
  • Login to the Server with Admin rights.
  • Make sure all your normal (non server admin) users are in a user group called something like OneSource Users.
  • Using the File Explorer find each of the .exe file (iexplorer.exe, chrome.exe, firefox.exe, bing.exe, etc), right click on the file, select Security and REMOVE (or change to Read Only) ALL individual users (and/or  groups of users that you do not want to have access to the file). NOTE: Be sure to keep the Administrators and Owner and other groups—so they can continue to use the browsers as necessary.
  • Test the browsers on a login that should no longer have access.  (In some cases you have to log out and back in before security changes take affect).

Internet Explorer ( IE , iexplore.exe )

Adding a Website to the Trusted Sites Zone (to allow files to be downloaded to the Server)

  • With the website URL entered in the 'Address' field at the very top of the browser click... Tools > Internet Options > Security (tab) > Trusted Sites (click on checkbox) > Sites (button)
    • Note: If you cannot see the menu bar try pressing the Alt key on your keyboard to display the hidden menu bar.
  • With the Trusted Sites pop up screen showing, if necessary, type the website URL in the  'Add this website to the Zone' field and then press the Add button. (It should appear in the list of Websites below.
    • You may need to uncheck the 'Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone).
  • Then click Close > then OK.
  • Now test downloading the file again.

How to Enable file downloads in Internet Explorer:

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
  3. In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Security tab.
  4. Click Custom Level.
  5. In the Security Settings dialog box, scroll to the
    Downloads section.
  6. Under File download, select Enable, and then click OK.
  7. In the confirmation dialog box, click Yes.
  8. Click OK > Apply > OK.

You can now download files.
