How to Compact / Repair / Decompile

How to Decompile

  • Open Start > Run > then type: msaccess.exe "...full path name\database name.mdb" /decompile
  • Then press the Open button.

How to Compact and Repair (without opening the Access mdb file)

  • NOTE: It is BEST to run the /decompile option FIRST (This will usually help the file compact down much smaller, and may help us repair corruption more successfully)
  • Open Start > Run > then type: msaccess.exe "...full path name\database name.mdb" /repair
  • Then press the Open button.

How to make a batch file to compact all mdbs at one time

Make a new Notepad doc.  Call it something like: CompactAllFiles.bat

Right click the file (when closed) and click Edit and type the contents below, changing the paths as necessary:

How to Buy the proper version of Access 2013 for use with OneSource

For various reasons, OneSource runs best on a Windows 2008 or Windows 2012 Server using Remote Desktop (RDP).  In order to 'install' Microsoft Access 2013 (or Microsoft Office Professional which contains Access 2013) you cannot just go buy a copy of Access or Office at an office supply store--because it won't install.  In order for the product to 'install' on a server running Remote Desktop you must buy Microsoft Access 2013 (Open Business) or Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013 (Open Business).  Also, in order to open an 'Open Business' account with Microsoft you must buy a minimum of 5 licenses (of any type).  That being the case you have 2 choices when buying 5 licenses:

  1. Buy 1 license* of MS Access 2013 (open business) or 1 license of MS Office Professional Plus 2013 (Open Business) and then buy 4 additional licenses, such as Remote Desktop 'Client Access Licenses' (CALs) or Windows Server CALs (if you are buying the licenses for a new server) or even some other type of Open Business product as a 'filler' (to help you meet the 5 license minimum) such as 'Forefront Unified Access Gateway, User CAL - Open Business, or
  2. Buy 5 or more licenses* of MS Access 2013 (open business) or 5 or more licenses of MS Office Professional Plus 2013 (Open Business).

    * OneSource can be operated using the free 'Runtime' version of MS Access by adding the /runtime switch on the OneSource 'shortcut' on each users desktop.  However, the runtime version prevents the use MS Access to manage tables, queries, etc--so you will need at least 1 copy of MS Access for this purpose.  On the other hand, if you plan to allow all your users to use the various applications that come with MS Office Professional Plus (such as MS Outlook or MS Word) then to properly license the use of those products you will need a license for each user.}

If you purchase a Server from OneSource Software Solutions we will include the necessary Windows Server CALs, Windows Remote Desktop CALs, and the MS Office Professional Plus 2013 CAL with the server.  You can also purchase the Open Business versions of MS Office Professional Plus or MS Access from a number of resellers on the web.  Here is one reseller that we like:

Fixing Errors

Windows 2008 Server R2 / Windows 7 - Hotfix for MS Office Access Hanging/Freezing

  • BUG: On Windows 2008 Server R2 (and Windows 7) we have discovered (and Microsoft has acknowledged) that there is a bug in Windows Server 2008 R2 that causes all versions of MS Access / MS Office (and therefore OneSource) to randomly freeze (stall or hang) for 15-180 seconds when selecting values from a drop down selection list (combo box) that has a large number of records and/or almost any other random task. We have noticed that this is the most pronounced (easy to duplicate) when selecting a Customer on a Sales Order and when entering items on the Sales Order (when the drop down lists are fairly large).
    • NOTE: When logging into a Windows Server (w/ Terminal Services) it does NOT matter which Windows operating system your PC (or even MAC) is using to log into the Windows Terminal Server.  So, in other words, if you are using Windows 7 to login to Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008 R1 then you will NOT have a problem with the bug mentioned above.
  • FIX FOR BUG for Office 2010. Microsoft contacted us in the later part of 2011 and told us that they have fixed the bug--for Access / Office 2010 ONLY by installing Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Microsoft Office 2010. (32-bit)  (NOTE: OneSource does run on 64-bit versions of Windows Server but does not run on any 64bit versions of Microsoft Office or Access) .
  • IF YOU ARE USING MS Office 2003 or MS Office 2007 AND are using MS Window Server 2008 R2 you have 2 basic options to get around the problem:
    • Upgrade your version of MS Office to MS Office 2010 and apply SP1.  (Make sure to purchase the 'Open License' version so it can be used with Terminal Services).
    • Or, downgrade your server to Windows Server 2008 (original version) (or Windows Server 2003 32 or 64 bit).  You can request a free disc from Microsoft for the original version of Windows Server 2008 (if you have purchased Windows Server 2008 R2)--but will have to completely re-install the server operating system.

Compile Error: How to Make Your MS Access Applications Compatible for Both 32-bit and 64-bit Office

32 bit and 64 bit MS Access cannot be mixed on the same computer. The incompatibility of your Office system to an MS Access file creates compile errors as shown below:

To be able to run a multi-user database with a mix of 32 bit and 64 bit Access on 64 bit computers, the following code needs to be added to your VBA Declared Functions:

To do this, type <#If VBA7 Then> on the line before the Declare Function with error (highlighted in red, meaning, these are the parts of the code that are not compatible). Then type <#Else> on the next line  and copy paste the same Declare Function.  Type <#End If>. Finally, insert <PtrSafe> in between 'Declare' and 'Function' on all the functions in between '#If VBA7 Then' and '#Else'

See below illustration:

On the Tab Bar, click "Debug" then select "Compile Database".

Repeat this process  to all other incompatible codes (in red font).
